Natasha's Yoga Journey

Almost 7 years ago, I broke my knee. The doctor told me I would use a cane for the rest of my life.

Yoga does not remove us from the reality or responsibilities of everyday life, but rather places our feet firmly and resolutely in the practical ground of experience. We don't transcend our lives; we return to the life we left behind in the hopes of something better." - Donna Farhi

Almost 7 years ago, I broke my knee. The doctor told me I would use a cane for the rest of my life. I started training for a 5k shortly after. During my time in physical therapy, I began complimenting my recovery with yoga. I discovered pigeon at the time, and I was so hesitant to ask for help modifying the pose. This pose was more difficult than anything I was faced with in the physical recovery because my body couldn't do what my mind wanted to. I looked around at everyone else, focused on their practice, and compared my body to their body.

Metaphorically, I was off my mat. The years have passed and with the years, I'd neglected my practice only to find myself wanting to reconnect with my soul. I walked into Sanford Yoga Center and felt the light. This studio, this community, and this practice have empowered me to be on my mat. Each day that I practice, I practice on my mat. I celebrate the victories as they come...some days it's being present, some days it's when I didn't topple over with my eyes closed, some days it's feeling the release. And I am empowered to ask for the modification or even help with getting to the next level. Yoga has become a practice. It's become my practice, and I am so grateful because I never knew it to be my own. And now? Pigeon is my favorite. Every time I go into pigeon, my soul screams with excitement! A gentle (if you can call pigeon gentle) reminder of how far I've come floods my mind as I welcome the pigeon into my life.

Yoga is about welcoming the flock of pigeons into your life and embracing today's struggle as tomorrow's success. I encourage you to visit Sanford Yoga Center and experience the feelings of being a more refreshed and hopeful you.
